How drug addiction programs can help you get over your addiction

Young people of today irrespective of geographical locations are increasingly falling prey to addiction. This is a fact and many families are suffering due to this. The gravity of the situation is such that if we don’t do anything concrete right now things will go out of control. This is imperative because letting go will result in a catastrophe which will be very hard to repair.

People who get addicted show symptoms and these are actually warning signs for others to realize that something is seriously wrong. You cannot allow your loved ones or friends to destroy themselves through substance abuse. Remember that prevention in the first place is always better than seeking for a cure later on. Early detection is the key to faster recovery. Remember that help is never far away and there are various treatment programs through which an addict can get over his or her addiction.

If you observe that somebody is using drugs or becoming dependent on it talk to that person. If it doesn’t help, then seek immediate professional medical help. Treating an addict is not easy because it is a painful process. An addict has to go through a detoxification process to flush out the substance or substances from the body. During this an addict experiences withdrawal symptoms which are really painful.

Rehabilitation centres have different drug treatment programs which are designed to suit individual cases. Usually these centres divide these programs into various phases. The first phase is the detoxification process which is very intense. A person with high addiction rate will take several days to pass out from detoxification. Every program has a qualified counselor. The addict can discuss the issues which lead to addiction in the first place with his or her counselor.

Sometimes as a part of addiction program an addict is introduced to support groups. Support groups are well acquainted with addiction issues and they help addicts to feel at home while discussing their problems. This can be very helpful because the addict will feel that there are actually people who care about him or her. This results in faster recovery. At the same time a person suffering from addiction must also be willing to get over this problem. If he is forthcoming in discussing the issues that were responsible for his addiction the process of recovery speeds up.

During the initial part of a program an addict may feel uncomfortable because he is kept isolated. However isolation helps an addict to de-stress. This enables them to think better leading to self-reflection.

Gain life and peace of mind

Drug addiction plaguing their son’s or daughter’s lives and things going astray for them is the worst nightmare that any parents would have. No one wants this to happen to their kids or loved ones. But sadly things don`t happen the way we want or expect. Most of the times it’s the opposite that stare us. When a child is born he or she brings immense joy in the family. Parents go out of their ways to meet the neverending demands of their little ones as much as they can. Every father wants to give the best to his child whatever his financial position is. Their love is pure, selfless and divine.

Just imagine how much pain the same parents get when they see that their kids have become notoriously drug addicts. They see their children getting frustrated and depressed. The cravings in their bodies make them go wild and mad and the mental equilibrium is shattered into chards. Their addictive behavior gets erratic and family and friends get moved seeing their deplorable plight. One cannot sit keeping hands tied and wondering that time will heal the ailing condition. Ofcourse time will help but that has to be maneuvered by professional assistance and treatment programs. Returning to the normal life after years of drug addiction is very challenging and the transition consumes a lot of time. Well it can`t be blamed. After all the mind took a lot of time in going under that state, so it will take same or more than that to come out of it.

More the delay in initiating the drug treatment programs, more degrading the condition of the addict will be. The body and mind gets reduced to filthy trashcan and the zest to live life and achieve something departs forever. Whether you are above eighteen years or not addiction has to be curbed immediately. Parents have to realize that their children are walking on the road of recovery and as such they have to prohibit themselves from showering extra love and care while the treatment programs are going on.

Remember that your child is not the culprit but inside him is an evil that is corrupting you child. This evil has to be uprooted in no time and you got to be strong. When you see your child howling or crying for not getting the drug and looks miserable, don`t offer any help. Let the professional take care of this situation. They will intervene as they know best how to take out the patient from the mess.

The Better Way out

If we take a closer look at our lifestyles nowadays then we find that it is full of stress. There are so many sources of stress in our heads and around us. There is a urgent need for us to fight this stress in our lives and clean our heads and minds from it. If these stress on our body and mind is not taken care of and it prevails for a long time in us then it can lead to very depressing results. People use a lot many ways to come out of stress and use various methods of doing so.

When things go out of hand then there is a utmost need to counter it before it encounters our life. Things are not as they seem from far. There are certain things which must be thought of very logically in order to avoid the risk that it brings on us and take an initiative to get rid of them. The method adopted by a human mind to escape the current situation or mind set is generally known as Defense Mechanisms in psychology. Each and every individual uses defense mechanism to make their ways out of their problems.

The problem is there are some really good defense mechanisms whereas some are so bad that they can take your life or leave you in even worse than that situation. Some weak minded people cannot handle stress and they come into the pressure and make use of things like drugs and alcohol consumption in order to counter the stress that surrounds them but they are not aware of the fact that alcohol is not the answer to all the problems.

When you get drug addicted or alcohol addicted then you can only get rid of the problems till you are under the control of the drug or the alcoholic substance whereas if you find the better ways out then things will become a lot simpler and you will find that there are permanent solutions to it. For those who have gone too far in addictions can still be bought out of it by the drug and alcohol treatment programs. These alcohol and drug treatment programs are the ones which give you support and help you come out of your addiction problems. So help yourself and help others who seek help, it is indeed a very noble deed to do so.

Knowing your drugs

Any chemical that has the ability to enter the human brain from the blood stream and affect the functioning of the brain has the potential of being addictive. These chemicals may be collectively called as psychoactive drugs and the use of these substances may cause mood swings, perception changes, changes in understanding, behavioral changes and may also cause one to lose consciousness. It may prove useful to be aware of the various types of drugs, their effects and the way to treat their abuse. There are several such substances but they may be broadly categorized into three categories: Stimulants, sedatives and opiates.

Some of the commonly known addictive substances such as caffeine, nicotine and cocaine can be categorized as stimulants. These are substances that seem to improve body functions, both mental and physical, for a brief period of time. The effects of stimulants may be higher level of alertness, ability to be awake for long periods, increased productivity and so on. The physical effects include higher blood pressure, increased heart rate and a sense of agility that allows quicker and stronger movements. The addiction is only psychological and treatment programs have to deal with only the psychological symptoms during withdrawal.

Sedatives act by causing an almost opposite effect of stimulants. These substances have a pacifying effect on the subject. They reduce excitement and bring about relaxation. The most common of these substances is alcohol, marijuana and barbiturates. There are certain hypnotic or soporific substances whose primary effect is to cause sleep. The noticeable changes in the subject include increase in reaction time, slurring of speech and inability to think clearly and objectively. These substances affect both the body and the mind with the potential to cause severe addiction. Moreover, the body becomes dependant on these substances for normal functioning. Therefore, drug treatment programs have to careful in phasing out this need in the subject. Suddenly cutting one off from these substances may sometimes cause death.

The last but not the least potent of addictive substances are the opiates. As the name suggests, these substances are derived mainly from the poppy plant but can be synthesized as well. Morphine is the most commonly known opiate and was extensively used as an analgesic or painkiller since its discovery in 1804. The popularity of morphine only increased after the hypodermic needle was invented in 1857. Most of these substances are administered intravenously. These substances also affect both the body and the mind. But unlike sedatives the withdrawal would not have a fatal effect on the subject.

5 ways to a successful Drug Recovery

Drug recovery programs can be challenging and hard for many. Drug treatment programs can be extensive and painful depending on the history of the drug abuse. However, I have enumerated below five topics which may make your recovery program successful.

  • The first thing to expect when undergoing any of the treatment programs is the support for the patient. This support should ensue from friends, family and by the staff at the treatment center. The right kind of support can boost the confidence of the patient a great deal and can prove beneficial in the recovery process. A constant flow of support allows for speedier recuperation.

  • Secondly, to improve chances of recovery under any drug treatment programs is the duration. The longer the duration, the more effective is the recovery. Enrollment in a long term program ensures future sobriety and sustenance to hold off against cravings and also relapse. The will to stay away from cravings is something cultivated with time and determination—and time you must give.

  • Next come the types of treatment programs. Every addict has his/her own reasons for the addiction, so the history of drug abuse differs from individual to individual. What is needed in such cases is a personalized treatment program designed to meet specific needs of the patient. The history and the patient’s psychological and physical conditions should be understood with the help of tests and thus tailor-made treatment programs should be devised.

  • The treatment program thus devised should be versatile and flexible to accommodate the changing conditions and needs of the patient. A good treatment program is never rigid and self righteous. It is always designed to meet the needs of the patient to ensure the most perfect recovery as possible. Treatment programs that employ traditional means as well as holistic methods have proven to be quite effective.

  • Finally what matters is the inter relationship between the one who is treating and the one being treated. The relationship should not be based on superficial grounds like, “I’m spending money..Treat me!”, or, “He/She is just a patient”. The relationship must have mutual trust and honesty. Only then can any patient truly believe in the treatment and aim for sobriety. This very trust has enabled many miserable souls escape the death trap of drugs towards a new rejuvenated life.

We can win as one

In 1839, selling drugs on Chinese soil was a crime, as is the case in most parts of the world today. That was a period when there existed a huge and growing demand for Asian goods in Europe and the west. The Europeans paid for these goods with silver. And since there were no European goods that the Chinese were interested in, the flow of hard currency was steadily towards Asia. The British did not produce enough silver of their own and had to buy it from other countries, pushing the transaction costs even higher. So, they set out to even out the demand imbalance by creating demand for a product – Opium. What the world witnessed, as a result, was a bloody and fearsome war called ‘The opium wars’.

In the early ‘70s, the world was familiarized with the term ‘War on Drugs’. Popularized by the Nixon government, this was the culmination of several anti-narcotics efforts the beginning of which can be traced back to as early as 1914. The idea was to put a system in place that curbed the use of psychoactive drugs. In 2008, a whopping 1.5 million Americans were apprehended for drug related offenses. One third of these were sentenced and jailed. Whether the government achieved its goal or not is a matter of debate. But their accomplishments are commendable. And other countries around the world have also begun similar programs.

Any government initiative is not complete until the citizens partake in it wholeheartedly. The ultimate success of these endeavors lies in spreading awareness among the common people about the downsides of drug abuse. Science has progressed enough today to explain the working of drugs and designing effective drug treatment programs. There are several measures that we as individuals could take in order to launch our own personal wars against this menace.

Firstly, we must say no to these drugs ourselves. We must tell ourselves that our lives are precious and it is not worth wasting on a false sense of bliss that lasts only till it does. If we know we are already hooked on, now is the time to ask for help and decide to quit the habit. When we know of someone affected, it is our responsibility to help them, counsel them and coerce them to join a treatment programs. Last but not the least, we must remove from the society’s psyche that resorting to drugs is an easy way to achieve happiness and instill the confidence that we can win as one.

“Don't forget this fact, you can't get it back; Cocaine”- Eric Clapton

The drug cocaine was first extracted from the leaves of the plant known as Erythroxylon Coca. The bush grows abundantly in Indonesia, West Indies and parts of South America. Cocaine is known to possess an intense and powerful effect and stimulation which targets the brain and central nervous system directly. The majority of people who are drug abusers take cocaine more than any other drug they take. The drug induces a state of mind in which one feels extraordinarily alert and hyperactive mixed with a feeling of euphoria and recklessness. These effects are the main contributors to cocaine being so wildly popular.

Cocaine was primarily used as a medicine by Europeans in the early 15th century. The 18th century saw a rise in the availability of cocaine in more concentrated forms and soon new medicinal uses of the drug were discovered. Cocaine was mainly used for the treatment of depression (due to its affect on the brain) and also used as an anesthetic. Cocaine was thereafter used regularly in elixirs and tonics and soon found its way into the popular soft drink ‘Coca Cola’.

In modern day medicine, cocaine has been categorized as a Schedule-II drug. It has a potential for abuse and thus only a qualified and experienced doctor may administer it legitimately. Medicinal uses of cocaine involve its vaso-constrictive properties to be used as a topical anesthesia or in the treatment of the eye. The use however is slowly being restricted as better and more effective medicines have been researched. Cocaine is known to have a wide variety of physical and psychological effects. Some effects manifest themselves after just a few moments of the first dosage—and staying there for a couple of minutes/hours.

Physical effects include dilated pupils, constriction of blood vessels, increase in blood pressure and heart rate. These effects lead to a sense of decreased tiredness, which means that the subject feels extremely hyperactive. During the ‘high’ the auditory, olfactory and visual senses are over-amplified leading to hallucinations. Over use of cocaine causes a development of tolerance in the body which leads to the addict taking an even higher dose. Cocaine addicts suffer from paranoid behavioral patterns, vertigo, shivers, hyperactivity, muscle twitches and hallucinations.

People get so addicted to cocaine that they forget everything else-everything about a normal life. The majority of drug treatment programs aim at cocaine abusers. These treatment programs are specifically designed to meet individual needs so as to get rid of the addiction without going into relapse.

9 Ways to feel, "Yes, I can"

Making the bigger goals come true often requires the path that leads to it to be broken up into smaller and more definite goals. If the goal, you are working hard for, is your dream then every smaller goal if complete on the way is rewarding experience. But what if the bigger goal is something dealing with getting rid of a shame? What if the goal is getting rid of drug and alcohol abuse? You register yourself in various drug treatment programs. But sometimes the very reasons, which caused you to take up these evils, hamper your very path of abstaining from them. Then you start to think, “Can I really do it?” Well here are 9 ways to make you feel, “Yes, I can!”

Reward Yourself

Reward yourself or pamper yourself when you complete your short goals. You will feel good about them. Like if you don’t drink or take drugs for a week go ahead and spend that money on your favorite things—a new pair of shades or a new clothes!

Do it for those you love

Abstaining from liquor and drugs can be extremely difficult at first. Whenever you feel your resolve breaking and your defenses weakening, always think about your loved ones and how they love and care for you. You will find renewed vigor and determination.

Switch Places

If your peers offer you drinks or drugs, promptly deny politely and trade places with someone more willing. Remember it is your life and no one has the right to spoil it for you. Let others take care of themselves.

Seriously think about quitting

No amount of determination will work if you haven’t given it serious thought. Weigh your options carefully. If alcoholism and drug abuse are ruining your life, then my friend, it is time to quit.

Share your woes

Several support groups have formed which are dedicated to alcoholism and drug abuse. You will find many in the same ordeal as you. Share your misery with them and listen to them too. Talk to your friends.

Get it over with

It is your life. Don’t let alcohol and drugs get hold of you. Remove the temptations. It will be hard, I know, but it will be equally rewarding. So roll up your sleeves and dive headlong. Work like a soldier and combat the hideous truth of your life, “I’m an addict and I’m gonna stop being one!”

Get trained

Various treatment programs offer training and education to addicts to cope effectively with their situations. It is up to you too to do the necessary research and cultivate the proper skills to handle it. With proper training comes proper enthusiasm and determination.

Start running

Yes! Just don’t think about starting slow or taking it slow. Don’t limit your intake. Stop completely. It is an uphill task and without momentum you won’t reach the top.

Try and try

Finally, if you fail the first time, don’t give up. Keep trying. Figure out a different approach, but get it done. You can!

Rehabilitation for revival

Every illness requires expert clinical and psychological support. This support is gained at rehabs which are well equipped with modern technology and have good facilities. These rehabs carry out one on one discussion with their clients and then based on their requirements, likes, social surrounding and economic background chart out treatment programs. These programs are based on their individual preferences and personal characteristics. The recovery programs not only focus on physical health but also deal with psychological problems if any. The rehabs have state of art technology, which is effectively used for benefits of their clients. The psychologists prepare behavioral therapies for reforming the thinking process. By doing this their clients are able to deal with their problems with a new perspective and renewed thinking pattern.

There are various types of addictions like alcohol addiction, drug addiction etc. these are more harmful types, whereas there are some types of addiction which are not that harmful to the individuals. These addictions can be less fatal and do not harm the body. These are compulsive shopping, cleaning and so on. These individuals are often tagged as fanatics. They are obsessed with their habits. But these are comparatively less harmful habits and have more to do with psychological problem than physical. But the above mentioned addictions are very dangerous if not treated on time.

A more personalized approach is carried out and the treatment is planned accordingly. They do not follow the routine path of treatment, but experiment new recovery plans to get effective and better results. The rehabs do not only aim recovering from the addiction but also carry out programs which help in rebuilding the lost self esteem, self confidence etc. Drug treatment programs at rehabs primarily focus on getting the toxins out of the patients’ body. This process is called detoxification. It requires professional support and expert supervision.

Lack of which can call for troubles. Hence, it is always recommended to be admitted into rehabs for getting professional support. These rehab centers not only provide support and professional help for recovery but also change the life style by changing the mindset and thinking patterns of an individual. These centers also rope in the families for prolong support in providing the newly sobers a very healthy environment around them, which prevents them from going back to the addiction.

Reliable recovery treatment for less chances of relapse

Drug addiction is a pathological or abnormal condition which arises due to frequent or prolonged drug usage. The disorder of addiction involves the progression of acute drug use to the development of drug-seeking behavior, vulnerability to relapse, and decreased, slowed ability to respond to naturally rewarding factors. The researchers have categorized three stages of addiction: one of them is preoccupation or anticipation, second one is binge or intoxication, and the last one is withdrawal or negative effects. These stages are characterized everywhere by constant cravings and preoccupation with obtaining the substance; using more of the substance than necessary to experience the intoxicating effects; and experiencing tolerance, withdrawal symptoms, and decreased motivation for normal life activities is a cycle which continually goes on in drug addiction.

It is, both among scientists and other writers, quite usual to allow the concept of drug addiction to include persons who are not drug abusers according to the definition of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. The term drug addiction is then used as a category which may include the same persons who, under the DSM-IV, can be given the diagnosis of substance dependence or substance abuse. The terms abuse and addiction have been defined and re-defined over the years. The 1957 World Health Organization Expert Committee on Addiction-Producing Drugs defined addiction and habituation as components of drug abuse:

Drug addiction is a state of periodic or chronic intoxication produced by the repeated consumption of a natural or synthetic form of drug. Its characteristics include: an overpowering desire or compulsion like need to continue taking the drug and to obtain it by any means; a tendency to increase the dose; a psychological as well as generally, a physical dependence on the effects of the drug; and detrimental effects on the individual and on society. There are many rehabs which help in recovering from this addiction. Specialized treatment programs are planned out for the clients. The rehabs have drug treatment programs which not only aim at recovering from the addiction but also prevents from relapsing.

Various kinds of approaches are followed by the medical experts at the rehabs. They take care of overall aspects of recovery like physical, psychological and social. There are rehabs which also help to put their clients at par with other normal individuals on the professional front by helping them get a degree.

Getting rid of drug addiction under expert guidance!

There are various kinds of addictions such as drug addiction, alcohol addiction, substance abuse, eating disorder. All these are diseases associated or arouse due to some or the other kind of mental problems. Some of these psychological problems could be stress, social pressure of a role etc. We cannot generalize and claim that the addiction is caused due to psychological reasons only. But the definitely form one of the major reasons. Initially the rehabs would follow a similar kind of pattern for almost all the patients, this program would be tried and tested. Thus they would not get similar kind of results from all the clients. The approach of the rehab at initial stage was not individualistic; rather it was based on the experiments.

Now there is complete makeover in the attitude and approach of the rehabs towards the clients. These days a more personalized approach is carried out and the treatment is planned accordingly. They do not follow the routine path of treatment, but experiment new recovery plans to get effective and better results. The rehabs do not only aim recovering from the addiction but also carry out programs which help in rebuilding the lost self esteem, self confidence etc.

The rehab programs follow various steps towards recovery and prevention of relapses. These drug treatment programs help the individuals in embracing the life with new zest and fervor. There are various activities which help in molding the cognitive behavior and think in appropriate style. Contemporary rehabs are, in contrast to the earlier ones, resemble more to a place where one would definitely like to be, it is very much luxurious, closer to nature, away from the hustle bustle of the city life. One more reason for having the rehabs outside the city is to preserve the privacy of the clients. This is one of the important factors in selecting the right rehabs.

There are many factors which lead to addiction. Some of these factors could be social, emotional or economical. Once any addiction goes beyond the limits and starts causing problems to one and to the others who are near and dear ones, then this is acknowledged as a problem and then the search for suitable drug rehab program is started. People look out for a rehab which fits into their criteria. There are various types of rehabs these days such as men’s rehab, women’s rehab, Christian rehab, free rehab etc. all of these rehab aim only at recovering and eliminating the roots of the problem.

Men need more emotional support and care.

It is very much natural to get used to anything that makes our life easy or extends support. Human being is an emotional creation. Hence he depends a lot on other factors for satisfying his emotional needs. This support could be obtained in a form of friend, family. In case of these important factors are missing, then he involves himself in a constructive or destructive activities. Constructive activities can be like hobby nurturing, self development etc. But some may immerse themselves into profession or seek shelter of drugs for feeling complete or forgetting the exterior world. Men, being the bread winner of the family, are faced with this problem mostly. By nature they are secretive; they do not like to wash linen in public. This nature of theirs can take toll on their mental and physical abilities. Hence there is more chance of a man getting addicted to the drugs or any other substance.

But the most ignored part of this entire process is that, the drug addiction does not help us solve any of our problems; rather it leads us to take resort of escapism. The drugs give us a high and thus take us into a world of unrealistic. After the effect of drug is drained out one has to face the reality as it is. This task is even more painful. In reaction to unable to cope with the problems one takes help pg drugs once gain to escape into the unreal world. It affects the personal as well as professional life of a person.

Many rehabs offer recovery program targeted specially for men and women separately. This is so because; it is very human to feel comfortable in the company of the same sex. People tend to respond in a very positive and cooperative manner while surrounded by the similar sex. They very much feel connected and co relate with each other’s problem, giving a very reciprocal response. Following this principle, there are specialized rehabs designed and dedicated to men only. These rehabs believe that drug treatment for men differs completely from the women’s treatment. The natural difference in weight, nature, body type and responses to drugs differ in both these species. The drug treatment programs helps men overcome their addictions by giving them highly structured but caring support, which is required by men.
